Solar PV Carbon Credit Monitoring: Every kWh From Every Rooftop, Verified
Small-scale solar can earn carbon credits, but only if every kilowatt-hour is backed by evidence a verifier trusts. With hundreds or thousands of rooftop systems, that means meter readings, downtime records and photos from every home, every month. Our 60-second walkthrough shows how CitizenClimate collects them.
The film follows a fictional project, Kopanelo Rooftop Solar, with 1,478 systems on homes and spaza shops in a community that knows load shedding all too well.
Setting up the project
1. Create the project: name, type, communities and area.
2. Invite households and installers.
3. Add the monthly meter survey: kWh reading, downtime and panel condition.
4. Track SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy: access, reliability, cost and change.
5. Teach panel care and safe use with lessons and a quiz.
6. Open the forum and grievances: a voice for every home and installer.
On the rooftops
7. Installers log every system: GPS location, panel photo and capacity (3.0 kWp with a 5.0 kWh battery for the newest system in the film).
8. Meter photo in, reading verified: each reading is checked against the expected solar yield before it counts.
9. Faults caught, fixed fast: output drops are routed to a technician.
10. Verified kWh, avoided carbon: estimated and ready for verifiers.
11. Live on your project website through the API, as each reading is verified.

How a meter reading is verified
Each month the household photographs the meter and enters the reading. The app compares that month's generation with what the system should produce. In the film, Thandi's 3.0 kWp system is expected to generate 474 kWh in October (3.0 kWp × 158 kWh per kWp). Her meter shows 465.2 kWh, 98% of expected, which falls in the 'Meeting expectations (95-105%)' band, so the reading is verified and she gets her reward.
Catching faults before they cost credits
When Lerato's system drops to 54% of expected, the app raises a performance alert and routes it to Bongani, a technician. On day one he resets the inverter and rinses the soiled panels; by day two output is back to 97%. Every hour of downtime is logged with a reason, which is exactly what a verifier asks for, and fast repairs mean fewer lost kilowatt-hours and fewer lost credits.
Keeping energy access data honest
Credits rest on generation, but buyers increasingly want to know what solar changed for people. The SDG 7 survey asks about access, reliability, cost and whether access has improved, worsened or stayed the same. It carries no cash reward, so answers stay honest, and the 'Worsened' option is kept as a credibility check. In the film, 81% of households say access has improved.
Rewards that fit the job
Different surveys carry different rewards. In the project behind the film, the monthly performance survey pays a small currency amount plus points, because meter photos take effort and every reading counts. The SDG 7 survey carries points only. Regular reporters work their way through badges from First Inspector to Safety First, so the households and technicians keeping systems running get recognised too.

A record a verifier can trust
Small-scale solar projects commonly use methodologies such as AMS-I.F, where credits rest on the gap between solar generation and grid emissions. The dashboard brings the evidence together: verified kWh, downtime logs, GPS-tagged photos and SDG 7 data mapped to indicator 7.1.1. In the film, 2,518 MWh gives an estimated 2,392 t CO₂ avoided at an illustrative grid factor of 0.95 t per MWh, and a credit-readiness checklist marks the project ready for review by the verification body. Credits themselves are issued by the standard after independent verification.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are solar PV carbon credits monitored?
Through regular, verified generation records from each system, downtime logs, photos and registration data, which together show how much grid electricity the solar displaced. Methodologies such as AMS-I.F set the rules.
How does CitizenClimate verify a meter reading?
The household submits a meter photo and reading, and the app checks generation against the system's expected yield. Readings within the expected band count as verified; big drops trigger a technician alert.
Why is there no cash reward on the SDG 7 survey?
To keep answers honest. Paying for an impact survey can nudge people towards positive answers, so the energy access survey carries points only and keeps a 'Worsened' option as a check.
Does CitizenClimate issue solar carbon credits?
No. It produces the evidence pack for the verification body. Credits are issued by the standard after independent verification.
Why does reliability matter as much as access?
In places with frequent load shedding, a grid connection doesn't guarantee power. Solar with batteries keeps lights and fridges running through outages, so the SDG 7 survey asks about reliability as well as access.
