From Coffee Plot to Fair Finance: Data That Makes Smallholders Bankable
Smallholder coffee farmers grow a crop worth billions, yet many can't borrow at a fair rate. With no credit history or collateral, banks see risk, so loans are small, expensive or not offered at all. Our 60-second walkthrough shows how verified field data can change that.
The film follows a fictional cooperative, Ngazi Ridge Coffee, through eleven steps on CitizenClimate, ending with a Verified Farmer Profile that lowers the cost of credit and insurance.
Setting up the project
1. Create the project: name, type, communities and area.
2. Invite farmers and the cooperative.
3. Add five coffee surveys on one calendar: crop health, biodiversity, boundary, harvest and event alerts.
4. Pay per verified survey: mobile money on the first of every month.
5. Connect a bank, an insurer and a credit guarantor, with verified profiles shared only with the farmer's consent.
6. Add parametric cover that pays out on rainfall deficits, extreme heat and drops in vegetation index (NDVI).
On the plots
7. Walk the plot and lock three sample points: the app picks random points and locks them by GPS, so photos always come from the same spots.
8. Monthly crop health, AI-verified: five photos a month, four AI checks before they count, then payment.
9. Early warning: leaf rust is caught at a sample point 4 to 8 weeks before satellites would see it, and a $50 treatment loan goes out the same week.
10. Better data, better loans: the Verified Farmer Profile unlocks lower rates, bigger loans and cheaper cover.
11. Cover pays out and the loan stays safe: payouts repay the loan first and the rest goes to the farmer, shared live via API.

What a Verified Farmer Profile changes
In the film's illustrative example, Neema's profile shows a risk score of 78 out of 100, a predicted yield of 850 kg, good crop health, high take-up of adaptation practices and six months of records. Compared with traditional terms, that means:
• Interest rate: 16% instead of 24%
• Loan ceiling: $800 instead of $300
• Insurance premium: 7% instead of 15%
• Credit guarantee: a guarantor covers 50% of the bank's loss
The guarantee only applies when a profile clears set conditions: a risk score above 65, at least three months of records, at least three adaptation practices and no previous defaults.
Four layers of de-risking
No single tool makes a smallholder loan safe. The model in the film stacks four:
verified field data that sharpens the lender's view of risk;
parametric insurance that pays out quickly on measurable weather and vegetation triggers;
a partial credit guarantee that shares what risk remains;
and sustainable practices that make the farm more resilient over time.
Farmers' photos also help reduce basis risk, the gap between what an index says and what actually happened on the plot.
There's an important principle behind this. Field and satellite data work best when they shape loan terms and trigger payouts, not as the only basis for saying yes or no. The profile gives lenders better information; it doesn't replace their judgement.
Why farmers stay engaged
Farmers are paid by mobile money for every verified survey, at rates the project sets, and they see the benefit in their own loan terms. Over two seasons, better records can lift a profile further, which is a far stronger incentive than a one-off payment.
In the illustrative two-year cycle behind the film, a farmer's risk score rises from 72 to 84, the interest rate falls from 16% to 13% and the loan ceiling grows from $500 to $1,200. Each verified season of records strengthens the case for the next loan.
All names, figures and terms in the film are illustrative. No real bank, insurer or guarantor is shown.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can smallholder farmers build a credit score without a credit history?
Through verified alternative data: GPS-mapped plots, regular AI-checked crop photos, practice records and harvest data. CitizenClimate turns this into a Verified Farmer Profile that lenders can use, with the farmer's consent.
What is parametric crop insurance?
Insurance that pays out automatically when a measurable index crosses a threshold, such as a rainfall deficit during flowering, extreme heat or a drop in vegetation index, rather than after a loss assessment.
How does field data catch coffee leaf rust early?
Monthly photos from fixed sample points are checked by AI, so signs of rust can be picked up weeks before they show in satellite imagery. In the film, rust is caught 4 to 8 weeks early and a treatment loan follows the same week.
Who can see a farmer's data?
Profiles are shared with banks, insurers and guarantors only with the farmer's consent. Public reporting through the API uses aggregated, anonymised figures.
Why pay farmers for surveys?
Regular, honest records are what make a profile valuable, and collecting them takes time. Paying by mobile money for each verified survey keeps records coming every month and puts money in farmers' pockets straight away.
